Clicker

In my last post I mentioned that we had brought in a behaviourlist to help with our issue of the girls fighting. There were some good and bad results that came from that. The good - we were reassured that the issue can be resolved and that a lot of the triggers that start most fights weren't being seen in the girls, so that was a bonus.

The bad... well, let's just say we spent a lot of money on a $2.00 POS plastic clicker.

We have never been big fans of clicker or reward training with the dogs. Mostly because pugs are so food motivated, we didn't really see that they were making the connection with the behaviour, they just wanted the food. We tried reward/treat training with MeiMei to get her to go outside when we first got her and, not only did she catch on but she also realized she could go outside and fake pee and come inside and get a treat. Go outside, get a treat. Yeah, it really resulted in me getting up a dozen times to take her outside before realizing that she wasn't really peeing... just looking for the reward. Crafty little pug

Introducing the Clicker to the girls was new for us. We were shown how to "feed the clicker" which is basically to get the dogs to associate the click sound with a positive result - getting a treat. Yeah, it didn't take them long at all to figure that one out. Then we were to associate an action that was causing some of the fights WITH the click (and the treat) to get the dogs to associate the positive with the action. One of the things that really sets MeiMei off is when you pick up Miko (and really, if you try to pick up MeiMei too - which was awesome that 2 weeks MeiMei hurt her back and was on "bed rest" - wait, I didn't tell that story yet... ) and so we were supposed to have one person pick up Miko (while giving her a treat) while clicking and giving MeiMei the treat. That would allow MeiMei to associate someone picking up Miko with excitment - YEAH, someone is picking up Miko and I am getting a treat!! Then, we wean them off the treats and just do the click (with intermittant treats) and then finally just the click and eventually just the action of picking up Miko should make MeiMei happy and excited. Makes sense, right? Well, we thought so... until MeiMei caught on before we could learn her properly and we ended up with the Click triggering MeiMei to go after Miko. Yes, she figured out that hearing the treat meant Miko was getting picked up and therefore she got pissed off!

So... honestly, we stopped using the clicker after just a couple of days because it was causing more fights then not and after we stopped using it... the number of fights decreased. That's not saying they have stopped - we still have more work to do with that (they actually got in a fight last night at 2am... right on my head!) and that's why we are signed up for this course. Well, that and a hundred more reasons. I am excited about the course.. but I am nervous because it also uses the clicker and I am hoping that we get taught better then we did before. Mostly because I think these fights are making Miko depressed and I hate to see my little boo so sad

Now who could fight with a face like that?

Urban Freedom

It's been a while since I have been in the habit of blogging... there really isn't much more reason for it than I am lazy, and so are the dogs, so we don't really have too many exciting things to share. Sure, I could post a million adorable pictures of the girls... but I suspect that even I would get tired of that after a short while!

Hopefully that is about to change for the better (the laziness aspect, anyway). Over the past couple of months we have been having difficulty with the girls getting into fights - and I mean, all out I want to rip your face off brawls where we have to literally pull the girls apart and put them in separate rooms for a minute until they calm down. It got really bad at one point - I seem to be a bit of a catalyst for this behaviour with MeiMei, she is the one who starts it and if I talked, touched or even looked at Miko MeiMei would freak out and lunge at her. It wasn't a good scene. The last couple of weeks have been a bit better though. We brought in a behaviouralist and got some ideas for training (totally didn't work... long story) but mostly I felt like we had some confidence to know that we CAN undo this. The feeling of helplessness was getting overwhelming and I finally started to see some light.

Now we have an opportunity to participate in the first class of the Impawssible Possible Urban Freedom Outdoor Training Program. I know, I know - what on earth would I be doing in an outdoor training program?! Well, it's not outdoor in the sense that we are hiking and climbing mountains (I hope!) but more in the sense of how to create a situation for your dogs outdoor, or in a public venue that is safe and controlled. It sounds like a great program and honestly I am excited (and scared) to be taking part in it. We are all doing it together - me, Jerry, MeiMei and Miko and my hope is that we are all on the same page in our disipline and bonding with the dogs and will be able to feel comfortable with them in more public settings and be able to share our lives more with them. I also HOPE AND PRAY we will find a way to feel comfortable with leaving the girls for a weekend (or more!) in the future so that we can get away sometimes. It's something that we haven't been able to do in ages and I hope this will help us with that too.

So - Tuesday is our first class and I will be sure to blog about it often!! It's a 10 week course and 3 classes a week!! I know! Super committment on our part, but I really think the results will be worth it. Stick around and find out how we do and what we learn!

MeiMei had an X-ray done today to make sure she didn't have any bladder stones and she was all clear! She just has another week of antibiotics and another pee test to make sure the infection is all gone. Way to go MeiMei!

I don't really mean that I will only be updating annually (although, kind of feels like it lately, doesn't it) but that we recently took the girls in for their annual exams at the vets office.

Recently, MeiMei had another problem with her peeper – in the morning she blazed out into the snow maze to do her morning pees and I noticed that she was trying to do it a number of times… I went to go check on what was going on and noticed quite a lot of blood drops in the snow. MeiMei seems to have this issue about once a year and noticeable around the same time of year. Something I think it's because of the snow being so deep and her need to pee in snow banks, I think that she is getting some germs back onto her peeper (how many times can I say that word in this post!) which causes her to have an infection. Every year we get her urine tested and cultured to see what kind of bacteria is in her urine and every year we kind of walk away with a … let's wait and see if it happens again type of thing. The vets are talking about doing an ultrasound to see if she has stones, which I guess would be the right thing to do to rule it out… I am just nervous about what the results would mean. So we have her on some antibiotics now and are waiting to hear back about the cultures and see if we need to go the ultrasound route.

Other than that, MeiMei has been doing really good in her health (knock on wood), she however, become a miss bossy pants and we find that the girls get into crazy scuffles more often than they used to. There are certain times that you can't pick Miko up around MeiMei and now when they get a little growly with each other it turns into full out WW3. I don't really know why that happens and the vet said that dogs can get grouchier when they get older, but MeiMei wasn't even in that age category to really make that the reason behind it.

Miko has been a doll recently too (knock on wood) – although last week we had discovered some bumps on her body. First around her head and then some on her neck and after a couple of days I found a couple more randomly around her body and pointed one of them out to the vet. They are really just scabs/ dried skin flakes and when I pick them off (gross, I know) there isn't really anything underneath. A little redness, but no puss or goo or bump under the scab to really see as anything except strange. Really I would like to go to the vet and get a confirmed answer to something that is happening with the dogs instead of usually getting – 'gee, I really don't know what that could be. Let's wait and see if anything changes and hope it just goes away'. I hope they do go away, right now we are attributing it to allergies, since poor babe has had so many issues with allergies in her life.

I also noticed the morning before the appointment that Miko's three bottom teeth were REALLY loose and was worried that the final call for "we got to put her under and pull some teeth" was coming, but the vet thought that they weren't really a concern and if she would just hold still a minute she could probably just pull them out. Thankfully that didn't happen right then (I think I would have fainted, for sure) and we are going to just "wait and see" how things go. They don't bug her, as far as we can tell and that pug isn't shy about her feelings about being uncomfortable/sick/hurt so all we can do is hope they fall out on their own.

We got some blood drawn for both dogs for Titer testing. I've never been a big fan of just blindly vaccinating the dogs every year, especially since they aren't really subjected to a lot of outside influences that could make them get these things, but better safe than sorry.

All in all, it was a good report. The girls look like they are in good shape, their hearts, eyes, ears and mouths are all good and we hope that it will continue that way for many, many years to come (KNOCK ON WOOD!!).

Recently, at 5 years old, Miko has realized that she has a voice! When she gets really excited about something, like us coming home or the Fed Ex guy coming to the door, she gets really excited and starts to howl. Of course, it doesn't take much to get MeiMei involved too!

Pet cleaning product for review

I was recently offered a chance to review a new cleaning product for pet owners and I jumped at the chance. With two little pugs, chances of having a mess on the floor, couch, bed or car to clean up is pretty darn good.

When I first received it, I kind of felt bad because I didn't have the opportunity to use the product and therefore, write a review on it. The marketing people kept sending me little pokes "hope we didn't miss it..." but I couldn't write anything until I had a chance to really test the product out. Well, two weeks ago - that certainly changed.

The first time I got to use it was when MeiMei threw up. I thought that there was good coverage of the area I needed to spray and unlike most times when the dogs can smell their "accidents" in the carpet, even after we used an "odor-eliminator", there didn't seem to be any after-smell that the dogs could catch of whif of.

The days following that first test, I got to use it a lot more. Both dogs got sick and Miko also started randomly peeing in the house (we got her urine checked, no infection - some crystals but mostly it seems it was all behavioural) so there were quite a few times when I could test it out. But the real comparison was when Jerry used our "old" cleaner on a puke spot and I noticed that the dogs kept going back to the spot and could obviously tell that "someone" had gotten sick there. The overall impression of the product was that it was gentle (didn't stain the carpet), eliminated odor and was easy to use. There wasn't any residue left over and you really didn't need to use a lot of it to clean it up right.

Another test came a few days after the puking had stopped. We had bought them girls some Antler treats to chew on and sometimes they can get a little bloody. MeiMei had chose to NOT chew hers on the rug we have on the floor for this purpose, but wanted to chew it on the carpet and there was a big, fresh blood stain in the middle of the hallway! So I tried the CLEAN+GREEN carpet cleaner on the blood and WHAMO - like it was never even there!

So, my over all impression - I like it!! I even hope to start carrying it at the Pawhaus soon!

Not sure what to think

The girls have been off lately. You know what I mean by "off"? They just seem to be acting odd or doing things that they have never really done before and it's really starting to worry me. It sort of started with a change in their supplements (we home-cook their food and add certain supplements to help keep them healthy - which has gone really well, mostly). I made the horrible mistake of thinking that maybe they could use a change to something that, I thought, would be better for them and taking them off something they had been on for years.

First off it was Miko injuring her neck (that was in May) and us having to have her lay-low for about a week. Then MeiMei got a bladder infection. Ok, no big deal, she has had them before.

All seems well, then I made the supplements switch. And then their regular treats started to get a little sketchy. MeiMei started to get a lot of mucus in her stool. Then Miko injured her back. Then we change their treats and there is now random throwing up.

Now Miko seems to be obsessed with humping MeiMei and randomly whining. She also won't leave MeiMei alone, but not in the bratty-sister kind of way, in the I am protecting you because I am scared something is going to happen.

Yesterday morning Miko threw up at 4am and then was fine all day. Today she ate her breakfast and then came and sat on me and did the strangest thing ever. She didn't lick!! Usually after she eats she will lick me, the floor, herself for 30 - 60 minutes. Like totally OCD - there isn't much you can do to distract her from the licking. Totally unlike her to not lick and it's really just started to bug me that there is something more wrong with them.

This morning, MeiMei threw up at 9:30 - some breakfast bits and mostly chucks of the new treats we are giving them (which, by the way, are just dehydrated fruits).

I'm not really sure what to do. I've made an appointment with the vet to get some of MeiMei's blood drawn (we got Miko's when she hurt her back) to see if anything comes up, but otherwise I guess it's a wait-and-see and hope that they get back into their groove. We have stopped all the new supplements and have gone back to the original ones and we hope now that Miko can run and jump again she will stop wanting to hump MeiMei so much...

I just really worry about my little pugs. I hope they are both ok.

Hello everyone! We are so sorry that we have been out of the loop for a while. We have been updating ourselves with your blogs and keeping an eye on how everyone is doing, but we have been so busy these last couple of weeks.

Miko is 100% again. She was better after a couple of days of rest. I think she liked getting carried around every where though. MeiMei had a bought of a bladder infection (which has since cleared up) and she also had a weird thing happen with her butt... which I can't really explain (and neither could the vet) but she seems to be ok now.

So, for your viewing pleasure - I give you the girls - being goofy!! I will try to post more often, I promise! We are working on getting our house "spring cleaned" (in July, I know) and we are getting things organized better so hopefully there will be more time to post. MeiMei will be turning 6 in a couple of weeks - and I can't believe it!! Hope you are all having a great holiday weekend! Be safe out there!

Miko Injury

So last night we were all just having a regular night... until we were getting ready for bed and I noticed that, not only did Miko not want to jump up onto the couch, she didn't want to go up the stairs. Very concerning since she started running up the stairs at a very young age.

We thought we would just go to sleep and see how she felt in the morning, but I was worried that she wouldn't be able to jump off the bed if she had to do some business and as the night crept along I also started to worry that she was in pain (which, I hated the thought of).

At around 3am I took her downstairs and called our local emergency vet hospital. I think what happened was that Miko tried to jump onto the ottoman and ended up doing a faceplant into the side. Not really the first time she has done that - but I think the way she hit it sort of jarred her neck.

The nice people at the er said it might be a good idea to come in, and so I woke up Jerry, packed up the girls and headed down. We were "lucky" that we were the only ones at the clinic when we arrived because we got seen right away.

The vet checked her out and took some xrays of her neck. She believed that it was just a strain, no fractures and that they would give her a shot for the pain and send us home with some more pain pills (which, by the way, are making her toots smell so bad my eyes are watering).

After a day of lying on her momma on the couch and getting carried around every where, she seems much more perky. We have to keep her lying low for a week - and at this point I think the hardest point will be convincing MeiMei that Miko can't play.

Poor little babe - nothing is sadder than a pug who doesn't feel good and walks around with a straight tail!

The list is a long one, when I am talking about the benefits of CocoTherapy Chips and Oil but I thought that I would give a little bit of personal experience to represent why we carry and LOVE these products!

I'm not really sure if this is limited to small dogs, but our pugs have always had trouble with their anal glands and leakage. If you don't know what that might mean but are grossed out at what you think it means... don't worry, you aren't far off. The Anal sacs are two small scent-sacs in the area of the anus. These are a type of "marking" glands. When a dog has a bowel movement, these sacs are normally squeeze, and a very smelly, oily secretion is released with the feces. If there isn't enough fibre in a diet, you have a nervous dog or the dog has runny poops - the anal glands won't get expressed naturally and there for will leak (when full) and then your nice, dry clean only pants are covered in a horrible stench and your dog is feeling uncomfortable from all the pressure (and stink).

MeiMei started having problems with her anal glands after a weekend at the dog kennel (first and last time we took her to a kennel) - I'm guessing because of stress she had some problems - down there - and has needed to get her anal glands expressed manually once a month or so (we usually head to the vet for something like that). Miko has ALWAYS had trouble with her anal glands and, although she has never had an infection (knock on wood), she used to have random anal expressions (on the couch, the chair, or pants, my arm and IN OUR BED) almost everyday. We sort of just learned to keep a blanket or towel on us at all times when she was sitting on us, and to not put on the nice clothes until we are just about ready to head out the door. We had also tried a couple of things to help her with this issue, increasing her fibre intake and such, but nothing really made a difference.

Until now. When we first got the CocoTherapy Chips in stock I ripped open a bag to try out with the girls. I had always read that pure coconut oil and meat had huge benefits for dogs like Miko (with tons of allergies, yeasty, smelly with tummy troubles) but never found a product that we liked and that made any difference. I started to sprinkle the Coconut Chips on their meals - just about 1 tsp or so (you have to be careful that you don't give them too much at first - just give them little bits at a time to see how they react with it) and after about 2 weeks I noticed something. No leakage. It was sort of shocking because even after we would get her anal glands manually expressed by the vet - the leakage would come a few days later (if not the next day) and we never really got relief from it. But this seemed to be doing the trick! The true test came a couple weeks later when we went back to the vets office for our "monthly treatment" (of anal expression) and they mentioned that Miko's anal glands weren't really full.

HAAAAAZZZZZZAAAAA!!!! We have been continuing to give them the Coconut Chips sprinkled over each meal, and although we have had an incident here or there, it is NOTHING like it had been before and for that, I am excited about this product and am proud to be carrying it!

Another benefit I have heard about with the Coconut Oil - other than helping with bad breath, flaky/dry skin and increase your health, help you lose weight and fight infections!!! It also helps with TEAR STAINING! We recently read some customers reviews on the CocoTherapy facebook page that they were so excited to be using Cocotherapy Oil with their pets and their tear staining had improved! This is without the aid of antibiotics or products that could have some potentially harmful effects with your pets.

It truly is a wonderful product!

Games We Play

I was reading an article the other day that during the winter time, it's still very important to keep your dog(s) active and moving, working and not bored. This is a little tricky with our girls because they will barely move out the door to do their bathroom business and if they do they usually insist on being carried back to the house because it's cold and snowy and they are just too precious to have to endure such things (and since I'm a sucker, I agree and carry them to the house). So I figured that there could be another way to keep their minds busy with a Nina Ottosson interactive toy. I got one all keyed up one morning (putting their favorite treats in the proper slots) and watched how they figured it all out:

MeiMei was a little more interested in it than Miko (which is usually the case)

and it didn't take her long to figure out that there were treats hidden in the puzzle
she quickly figured out how to move the pieces around - leaving Miko on the sidelines watching
she actually managed to move the disks around and got all the treats out!
Then Miko figured out that there was a way to get treats and insisted that I fill it up again so that she could have a go at it
unfortunately, MeiMei wouldn't share her new toy
and, as usual, Miko just continued to sit and stare at it until I gave in and gave her the treats that I had in my hand
so she didn't have a need to play the game anymore
because she already knows who to play in the house
and she is the winner of that game everytime!

Working for a Living

So, the real purpose of this picture was to tell you what a hard worker MeiMei was on Halloween night. MeiMei gets real excited when people come to the house and so I though it might help with all the barking if she could see when people are approaching for Trick-or-Treats and then wouldn't want to bark so much. So I opened the drapes to give her a look outside. (Miko doesn't really understand the concept of all of this and usually gets pushed out of the way by MeiMei - hence her "what the..." look in this picture)

So MeiMei was wait patiently to see if someone would approachand would run over to the door (without barking) when she saw that people were coming up the walk. It was working out really well - except for the ones who didn't end up coming up the walk and just walked by our door. MeiMei would stand there, not sure why it would take them so long until I opened the door to show her that they moved on. Each time, she looked crushed that they didn't come to see us (her).
Miko, on the other hand, caught onto this deal pretty quick and new exciting where she should be for the night - on Papa's lap - which is what she does best.

Now, if only I could get them to do this stuff for a pay cheque - we might be set!

ACE Needs our help

Guys - remember how awful we all felt when our darling friend Walter had his accident and we all came together to help Heather and Walter fight and get better... well, there is another little pug who needs our help!
Here is what Midwest Pug Rescue has to say about what happened to him:

his poor little puggy, we are calling him "ACE" was hit by a car on Thursday November 13th around 1:00 in the afternoon. The accident happened near Old Shakoppe Road and Nesbitt Ave in Bloomington, Minnesota. The person who hit him brought him to an animal clinic close by where he is getting excellent care.

We are STILL hopeful the owners will reach out and find him, but so far no one has. This breaks my heart, he is SO special! We just can't leave him to be put down because no one can pay his bills to make him better!

He is doing actually great all things considered. He is on pain meds and needs surgery ASAP to repair his broken pelvis. He does not any internal injuries which is a miracle and encouraging news. Hecan even peep on his own which is a GREAT sign at this point.

The Midwest Pug Rescue MN Division Group has made a decision to take on any costs it will take to save this pug. After his surgery he is expected to have a full, happy life as long as he has proper medical care now to help repair/heal his injuries.

We would greatly appreciate ANY donations, no matter how big OR small! We need to rally up a few thousand dollars to apply to his surgery/medical needs. We are hoping from the generiousity of our fellow pug friends and dog lovers, this darling unconditionally loving pug can be saved and live a long, loving, wonderful life like he DESERVES!

Tooth Fairy

Part of our morning routine included wiping the girls face/nose and brushing their teeth. I'll be honest and say it doesn't happen everyday - but usually a couple times a week. A couple of months ago I noticed that two of Miko's teeth are kind of loose and wiggly - but when we mentioned it to the vet at our last visit, she said to keep an eye on it - if it starts bugging she would have to have it removed. Well, sure enough on Monday when I was brushing I saw something weird moving around in Miko's mouth and when I took a t look - the tooth had popped out!! She swallowed it quickly, of course (*Side Note: We never were able to get one of Miko's puppy teeth, although we do have a couple of MeiMei's) and there was barely any blood. Concerned about breakage and infection we made an appointment with the vet.

Everything seems to look ok and Miko was never phased over the tooth being gone. Although she might not be too impressed to learn that she is going to miss out on the tooth fairy leaving her something under the pillow.

Ever since our friend Walter had his accident I've been more and more worried about what could happen if the girls ever gave us the slip (it's happened once or twice before this - so it made me think even more)... sooooooooo

Introducing Walter-Gate:
I ordered this simple, extendable gate that doesn't need to attach to the wall (free standing) and is short enough to step over easily but still keep the pugs in
so next time the pizze guy comes, I won't have to lock the pugs in the bathroom in order to pay and next time we have friends/family over we won't have to force them through the doors to keep the girls from running outside like a bunch of crazies
the girls didn't seem too impressed with their new restrictionbut honestly to keep them safe and sound - I can deal with it.

Now go over to Walters site and hear about how AWESOME he is doing these days - 20 minutes on the treadmill!!!! Way to go!!

As I mentioned last week - I like to try out as many as the products that we carry in Pawhaus as I can with the girls. That way I know what I am talking about when I recommend it to a customer.

So one of the items we recently brought in is the ReadyLeash:The ReadyLeash is an innovative, non-retractable leash with bags built-in! The ReadyLeash features an comfort-grip handle with an integrated clean-up bag dispenser. The bags simply pull out like tissues and refillables easily pop into the handle. XtraLeashes can be attached to the ReadyLeash handle for walking multiple dogs.

So, I attached an XtraLeash to our handle and hooked the girls up.
The more I used the ReadyLeash, the more I realized how comfortable the handle was to hold. At first I thought the leash length (I have medium size on there for each of them) wasn't enough - I thought that we would be tripping all over each other and giving each dog enough "space" to comfortably do their "business" wasn't going to be easy - but it didn't end up being that way.

The girls easily got used to how much space they had for themselves and, unlike other couplers I have tried while walking the dogs, the ReadyLeash gives more space for the dogs to be apart from each other. They could both walk on either side of me without it feeling like they were pulling each other or pulling me from one side or the other.
Of course, the girls have to frequently check the Pee-mail around the neighborhood, which means that I have to be on the ball for when they want to stop so that I don't pull my arm out - but I did like the closer control that I had with them when it came to them trying to grab a rabbit turd off the ground.
I can't really comment on whether the ReadyLeash helps with a dog pulling - only because MeiMei and Miko are very good while walking and 90% of the time stay in heel and don't pull ahead or get too out of control. (Yes, I am spoiled with well behaved pugs ;)
However, I can comment on the easy convienence of having the poop bags in the handle. Very easy to pull out and biodegradable bags at that! The handle also has a very cool feature in that there is an opening on both ends. One to pull bags out of, and the other (self proclaimed) I could tuck the tied ends of the *ahem* used bag into the opening. Which means that I NO LONGER HAVE TO CARRY POOP FILLED BAGS IN MY HANDS!!!! If you are like us and don't have garbage bins in abundance in your 'hood then this is a very cool feature. This is also handy when you have two dogs to wrangle and don't always have an extra hand to pick up the additional doo that they drop. (Side Note: what is it about dogs and their reserve tank of pee and poop when they do on walks?? It's endless!!!)
So after about a week of using the ReadyLeash I can really say that I think it's a really useful product and will continue to use it when walking the girls. The only comment I have that isn't practical when using it for two dogs is when you are taking them somewhere, like the groomers or vet's office, and they need to be taken into the back, one at a time, on leash. It leaves you holding one dog while the other goes or coming up with another plan (maybe just clipping the leash to your person or something might work).

I think that the ReadyLeash is a great product and I will use it for a long time to come. If you are wondering why I favor a non-retractable leash.. well that's a rant I may have to save for another day.

Tax Deduction for Pet Care Expenses

H.R. 3501, the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (HAPPY) Act.

This Act would amend the Internal Revenue Code to allow an individual to deduct up to $3,500 for "qualified pet care expenses" for a legally owned, domesticated, live animal.

As Americans trim budgets to make ends meet, innocent animals should not go without adequate care. Even a small tax deduction for responsible pet owners will go a long way to meet the needs of companion animals, ease the tax burden of those who own a pet (63 percent of all households) and may even encourage more people to provide loving homes to the countless animals that fill America's shelters.

Please take a moment to sign the petition and urge your representative to co-sponsor H.R. 3501.

A BILL

To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to allow a deduction for pet care expenses.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the 'Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (HAPPY) Act'.

SEC. 2. FINDINGS.

The Congress finds the following:

(1) According to the 2007-2008 National Pet Owners Survey, 63 percent of United States households own a pet.

(2) The Human-Animal Bond has been shown to have positive effects upon people's emotional and physical well-being.

SEC. 3. DEDUCTION FOR PET CARE EXPENSES.

(a) In General- Part VII of subchapter B of chapter 1 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (relating to additional itemized deductions for individuals) is amended by redesignating section 224 as section 225 and by inserting after section 223 the following new section:

`SEC. 224. PET CARE EXPENSES.

`(a) Allowance of Deduction- In the case of an individual, there shall be allowed as a deduction for the taxable year an amount equal to the qualified pet care expenses of the taxpayer during the taxable year for any qualified pet of the taxpayer.

`(b) Maximum Deduction- The amount allowable as a deduction under subsection (a) to the taxpayer for any taxable year shall not exceed $3,500.

`(c) Qualified Pet Care Expenses- For purposes of this section, the term `qualified pet care expenses' means amounts paid in connection with providing care (including veterinary care) for a qualified pet other than any expense in connection with the acquisition of the qualified pet.

`(d) Qualified Pet- For purposes of this section-

`(1) QUALIFIED PET- The term `qualified pet' means a legally owned, domesticated, live animal.

`(2) EXCEPTIONS- Such term does not include any animal-

`(A) used for research or owned or utilized in conjunction with a trade or business, or

`(B) with respect to which the taxpayer has claimed a deduction under section 162 or 213 in any of the preceding 3 taxable years.'.

(b) Clerical Amendment- The table of sections for part VII of subchapter B of chapter 1 of such Code is amended by striking the last item and inserting the following new items:

`Sec. 224. Pet care expenses.

`Sec. 225. Cross reference.'.

So, I don't normally do the "tagged" games, not because I can't - just because sometimes I can't keep track of them or know who has all played. Winnie and Shelby are the first pug blog that we started to read when we thought about getting a pug and since Shelby and MeiMei look SOOOO similar - we love checking in on them and see what Shelby and her little two-legged brother, Vin are up to.

I love your seriousness and that little grey beard (which, I'm guessing you got because of a certain someone who likes to keep us all on our toes...)

The girls have been helping me get some things done this past week - and I gotta say, they really throw themselves in their work! They can't seem to let it go at the end of the day

Rachel guessed correct - we got our BooBeasties in the mail!! When I saw Rachel had posted about getting them for her anniversary - I had to check out the shop and send the creator a message with a link to our blog, asking if she would make custom BooBeasties of MeiMei and Miko. She is so super nice and agreed! We even got custom name tags on their collars and their sizes are just a little different (MeiMei being the larger, of course).

Here they areand their butts have curly tails!
these aren't dog toys, or really kids toys either but they are SUPER cute, very soft and EXTRA AWESOMESo, we introduced them to the girlsMiko seemed fairly unimpressed
MeiMei didn't see the resemblance
and like any other pug, the first thing they did when they got settle inwas wonder when dinner is.
